Outpatient Rehab While Working: Treatment That Fits Around Your Job

Most people who reach out to Sunview aren’t in a crisis that stops their life. They’re still going to work. The bills are paid, the calendar is full, and from the outside things look fine. That is often exactly why it has gone on so long: there was never a moment when everything fell apart enough to make stopping feel possible.

Outpatient treatment is built for that situation. You don’t check in anywhere or explain a month away. You keep your job and your home, and you come to treatment at set times during the week. At Sunview that can mean evening IOP three nights a week after work, day IOP three mornings a week, or the Partial Hospitalization Program if you’re able to step back from work for a stretch and need more support.

The clinical care is the same whatever the hours. You join one continuous group led by the same licensed facilitator, you meet your primary therapist one-on-one every week, and psychiatric care through Telemed Clinix is scheduled for you when medication is part of the plan. Substance use and the anxiety, depression or burnout that often sits underneath it are treated together.

The math of a week

How Evening IOP Fits Into a Full-Time Work Week

Nine hours out of 168

One example week for someone working full time
  • Sleep: about 56 hours
  • Work: about 45 hours
  • Evening IOP: about 9 hours
  • Everything else: about 58 hours

Work and sleep hours are typical examples, not requirements. Evening IOP is about 9 hours of group a week, plus a weekly individual session.

Monday, Wednesday, Thursday

Group meets from 6 to 9 PM. Tuesday, Friday and the weekend stay yours.

The same room every night

One group and one facilitator for the whole evening, so trust builds instead of resetting.

Your day becomes the work

The tense meeting, the drink you almost had at the client dinner. You bring it in and practice a different response.

When it still looks fine

Signs of a High-Functioning Alcoholic or High-Functioning Addict

Doing well at work doesn’t mean it’s under control

“Functioning alcoholic” isn’t a diagnosis, but the people who search for it usually recognize something. The pattern is the same with alcohol, cocaine, pills or a mix. A few of the signs we hear about most often:

Work is still fine

Deadlines get met, reviews are good, and that becomes the proof that nothing is wrong.

Drinking is scheduled

You plan around it: the drink after work, the bottle that has to be in the house, the event you leave early to keep going at home.

You’ve tried to cut back

Rules about weekdays, only beer, never before 5. They hold for a while, and then they don’t.

Home is paying for it

Your partner or kids see a different person at night than your colleagues see during the day.

Mornings are harder

Anxiety, poor sleep and the 3 AM wake-up that has quietly become normal.

You keep it compartmentalized

Different stories for different people, and a lot of energy spent keeping them straight.

None of these on its own means you have a substance use disorder, and only a clinical assessment can tell you that. But if several of them sound familiar, being good at your job isn’t a reason to keep waiting. People who are still working often do well in outpatient care, because they have structure, routines and something to protect.

Executive Addiction Treatment Without Stepping Away From Your Business

Executives and business owners often believe they can’t be gone, so they don’t go anywhere. Outpatient care removes that choice. You keep leading, and you do the work in the evenings or in the mornings you can protect.

Sunview doesn’t run a separate executive track. You join the same licensed clinical groups as everyone else, which tends to be part of what helps: in group, nobody reports to you.

Our CEO, Frank Galimidi, has spent more than 23 years in addiction treatment leadership and is a qualified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) under U.S. Department of Transportation regulations.

Recovery is practiced where you actually live: at work, at home, and in the room on group nights.

FMLA for Rehab, Time Off and Paperwork for Work

Questions people ask before they call

Many people assume getting treatment means taking leave. With evening IOP, most don’t need to change their workday at all. If your pre-screening points to more support, like PHP in the mornings, you may want time away from work for a while.

Medical leave, including FMLA, depends on federal and state law, your employer and your role, so we don’t make promises about it. Your HR department or an employment attorney can tell you what applies to you. If you have questions about time off or paperwork for work, ask us on the first call.

Sunview is outpatient care.

If detox, residential treatment or housing needs to come first, we’ll help you get there and plan Sunview as your next step.
