How ADHD and Substance Use Feed Each Other

Looking for focus, finding a new problem

At Sunview, ADHD is treated as part of dual diagnosis treatment, alongside substance use, within our Partial Hospitalization, Intensive Outpatient and Outpatient programs.

For many people, substances start as a way to manage what ADHD makes hard: a mind that won’t slow down, restlessness, frustration, or trouble focusing. Some use to feel calmer; others use stimulants to feel able to function. The relief doesn’t last, and using adds new problems of its own.

None of this is a character flaw. We look at how your attention, your emotions and your substance use connect, and build a plan that works with how your mind works.

Structure is part of the treatment

Structure and routine

Treatment happens at the same time, with the same facilitator and the same group. That predictable rhythm is part of the treatment.

Life skills and goal setting

Our groups cover life skills, goal setting, boundaries and emotional regulation: practical tools for the days that feel scattered.

Coping skills that stick

CBT and DBT coping skills give you something to reach for when impulses or frustration hit, other than a substance.

Practice in real life

You go home every day and try what you learned. What worked, and what didn’t, comes back to group the next time.

Therapy

Therapy Approaches We Use

Practical tools, plus the story underneath

Skills help with the day-to-day. Many adults with ADHD also carry years of being told they weren’t trying hard enough. We make room for that too.

How therapy works at Sunview
CBT
Helps with the thought patterns and habits that make follow-through hard and using feel like the answer.
DBT
Builds skills for emotional regulation and impulse control in the moment.
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
Explores the different parts of yourself, including the frustrated or self-critical ones that often come with ADHD.
Psychodynamic therapy
Looks at how experiences like feeling criticized or not good enough may still shape how you see yourself.
Medication

Psychiatric Care and Medication

Medication decisions made by your provider, with care

Sunview is abstinence-based, so stimulant medications like Adderall and similar aren’t used during the program. That doesn’t mean you’re on your own: psychiatric evaluation and medication management are part of every program through our partner, Telemed Clinix.

Your provider reviews your history and current medications and decides what’s clinically appropriate while you’re in treatment. Appointments happen virtually from a private office at Sunview, and you can keep the same provider after you finish.

What psychiatric care includes

  • Psychiatric evaluation and medication review
  • Appointments scheduled for you, on site
  • The same provider after discharge, if you want

Level of care

Which Level of Care Fits

Our Clinical Director helps you decide

Many people start in the Partial Hospitalization Program, where the same schedule every weekday builds routine. The Intensive Outpatient Program, day or evening, fits when you need depth and have to keep working. The Outpatient Program keeps a weekly anchor in place as your routine gets stronger.

Psychiatric care and medication management

Sunview is outpatient care.

If detox, residential treatment or housing needs to come first, we’ll help you get there and plan Sunview as your next step.

It was the most rewarding experience I've had in such a long moment of time! The knowledge and expertise of the staff was immeasurable, of high quality and refreshing! A special shout out to Jillian my therapist, Carissa and Frank! This by no means is meant or intended to take from the excellent job done by each individual employee and Sunview. I'm not the type that would just throw around gratitude lightly! Last but not least, I want to give a shout out to all my peers and all participants of Sunview, for their unselfish willingness to surrender and assist the healing and recovery of others! God bless you! Love, Henry Edwards and Tiffany Cunningham!

Sunview Wellness was the icing on the cake in my mental health journey and recovery and it honestly changed my life for the better..This program was outstanding in the approach they implement to help all of their clients. The important thing is you have to really want the help and do the work to get where you want and need to be. I believe participation in the group therapy is essential even though it may not be easy at first. Every single person that works at Sunview Wellness is caring and really wants everyone to get well. Laura Contreras was my therapist and she is one of the most caring empathetic individuals I have ever come across. She was truly the right therapist for me. Mia stood out to me ( even though everyone was good) as an excellent group facilitator . Karissa Delaney the office manager was always a welcoming face in the morning. She was always willing to help out with any concerns or questions that I had. I was actually sad when my time came to leave Sunview even though I was ready. I made many friends and enjoyed the interaction with other people that GOT IT with NO JUDGEMENT! And Finally thank you Frank for overseeing and having such a wonderful place for people to come and heal. I’m forever greatful. 😊💕
