Rehab for First Responders Who Need to Keep Working

First responders are trained to run toward the worst moments of other people’s lives and then go back to work the next shift. Over years, that leaves a mark. For many, alcohol or pills become the way to come down after a call, to sleep after a night shift, or to stop seeing things that don’t go away on their own.

Sunview is outpatient care, which means you can get real treatment without disappearing for a month. You come to group therapy at set times during the week, meet your primary therapist one-on-one every week, and see a psychiatric provider through Telemed Clinix when medication is part of the plan. Substance use and the trauma underneath it are treated together.

There’s no separate first responder track. You join the same licensed clinical groups as other adults, and every clinician on our team is trauma-informed. Sunview’s leadership has worked with first responders and people in high-pressure careers for years.

Substance Use in First Responders: What the Job Carries Home

Four patterns we hear about on the first call

Calls that don’t leave

The scenes you can’t un-see, replayed at 3 AM or when something small brings them back.

Shifts that break sleep

Rotating schedules and 24-hour shifts, and the drink or the pill that became how you come down.

A culture of handling it

You’re the one people call for help, which makes asking for it feel like a contradiction.

Home paying the price

Irritability, distance and drinking that the people at home notice before anyone at work does.

Treating PTSD, Trauma and Substance Use Together

For first responders, drinking or using is often how the trauma gets managed. Treating one without the other rarely holds. At Sunview, substance use and co-occurring trauma, PTSD, anxiety and depression are treated together, with one team and one plan.

Group gives you a place to say things out loud with other adults who are doing the same work on themselves. Your individual therapist uses approaches like Internal Family Systems, CBT and DBT.

Confidential Addiction Treatment for First Responders

You decide who knows

Your treatment records are protected by federal privacy law for substance use and mental health care, and we share information only with your written consent, except where the law requires it.

Questions about duty status, department policy or licensing are specific to your agency, so your department, union or an attorney is the right place for them. If your department has an employee assistance program, it can be a starting point, and you can also call us directly.

Sunview is outpatient care.

If detox, residential treatment or housing needs to come first, we’ll help you get there and plan Sunview as your next step.
