What Inner Child Therapy Is

Inner child work focuses on the younger parts of ourselves that may still carry emotions, beliefs or experiences from childhood. Feeling rejected, unsafe, criticized, or like you were never good enough can keep shaping how you see yourself and relate to others long after you’ve grown up.

In therapy, we help you identify those experiences, understand how they shaped the patterns you live with now, and develop compassion for the younger part of you that went through them. The point isn’t to stay in the past. It’s to stop the past from making your decisions.

At Sunview, inner child therapy is part of treatment within our PHP, IOP and outpatient programs, not a standalone private therapy service. If you’re looking for weekly private therapy only, we’ll point you to the right place.

How Psychodynamic Therapy Looks Beneath the Surface

“At its core, it is about understanding the ‘why’ behind what we do.”
Sunview’s Clinical Director

Psychodynamic therapy looks at how past experiences, relationships and emotions influence the way you think, feel and behave today. Rather than focusing only on the immediate problem, it explores patterns that may be happening outside your awareness.

That insight gives you more room to choose: to build healthier relationships and respond to life on purpose instead of on autopilot.

Reparenting: What It Looks Like in a Session

Giving yourself what was missing earlier in life

  1. 01

    Identify the part

Name the younger part of you that still carries an old feeling or belief, like “I’m not good enough” or “I’m not safe.”

  2. 02

    Notice when it shows up

Recognize the moments it takes over: a conflict at home, criticism at work, the urge to use after a hard conversation.

  3. 03

Respond from who you are today

Practice answering that part as the adult you are now, instead of reacting from an old wound or a learned pattern.

What reparenting offers:

  • Validation
  • Compassion
  • Boundaries
  • Safety
  • Support

Shame, Inadequacy and Fear Underneath Substance Use

Substance use often begins as a way to cope with feelings that were there long before the first drink or drug.

Shame

Old messages that something is wrong with you, which substances can quiet for a while.

Inadequacy

The early sense of not being good enough, still shaping how you see yourself as an adult.

Fear

Experiences of feeling rejected or unsafe that taught you to protect yourself any way you could.

Why Coping Skills Alone Are Not Enough

We value coping skills and relapse prevention, and we teach them. But without exploring where triggers and thoughts began, those skills can become a band-aid over a bullet hole: helpful for a moment, hard to sustain over time.

Coping skills alone compared with skills plus insight
Skills aloneSkills plus insight
Manages the trigger in the momentExplores where the trigger began
Teaches what to do insteadExplains why the old response made sense
Can fade under real-life stressBuilds insight you can use when life pushes back

Inner Child Work and Internal Family Systems

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is part of the shared foundation of our clinical model, woven into group topics and used in individual sessions when it fits. IFS gives a language for all your parts; inner child work focuses on the youngest ones. Together, they help you understand what each part is protecting.

When This Work Begins in Treatment

Early in treatment, a lot is still happening at the surface: adjusting to structure, managing cravings, learning to feel safe. Asking you to unpack deep wounds right away wouldn’t be realistic or kind. As you stabilize and trust your therapist and peers, the work can go deeper.

  1. 01

    Stabilization

Settling into structure, sobriety and safety. Deep wounds wait.

  2. 02

    Insight

Trust grows, and the question shifts to “why do I respond this way?”

  3. 03

    Integration

Insight becomes new choices at home, at work and in relationships.

What People Say About Sunview Wellness

Google Reviews

  • Jake J.

Sunview Wellness is second to none. The staff at Sunview are amazing people who truly want to make their clients lives better and healthier. The staff provides you and others with an environment conducive to healing, learning and managing your life. You are able to express yourself without judgment from the staff or other clients. You are provided guidance through group sessions, private one-on-one sessions with a therapist and written materials to use outside of the facility. Although Sunview Wellness is a business and needs revenue to survive, the staff focuses predominately on your health and not on its bottom line. I highly recommend Sunview Wellness as an option for your path to healthier and more productive life.

Gabe is awesome! I have had therapists before at other practices and he is one of the most empathetic and down to earth providers I have had. The group facilitators and other staff there are very kind and helpful as well. The support to get you back onto a good mental health path is amazing. Would recommend if you want more help than just a one on one therapist but want to still go home and/or work after.

  • Erica S.

I just wanted to express my gratitude, every single staff was so kind and compassionate. It took me a while to actually be receptive to the things they were teaching me and trying to help me. But once I was and truly understood and was willing to help myself too it was magic. I’m grateful for them. I’d recommend them to anyone! I also would recommend for Sunview to include same sex groups at least once a week, I believe it helps common issues and resolution insight and connection a more comfortable space for the same sex to connect to each other without feeling judgement or afraid to express their opinions and experiences in front of the other sex. (In my afternoon groups was primary female and it was an amazing experience) so much props to Sunview for giving me the tools and resources to believe myself and better myself! Thank for to every staff member there!!!!
