How Therapy Works at Sunview

There’s no single method here that everyone gets. Our team shares a common foundation, including Internal Family Systems, CBT, DBT and trauma-informed care, and each clinician brings their own strengths and specialties to it.

All of it happens inside our outpatient programs: PHP, IOP and OP. We don’t offer standalone private therapy. If you’re looking for weekly private therapy only, we’ll point you to the right place.

Many people we work with live with substance use and a mental health condition at once, so the therapy treats both together. See dual diagnosis treatment.

“Our goal is not to keep people in treatment indefinitely, but to help them develop the insight, skills, and internal resources they need to build a meaningful life in recovery outside of treatment.”
Sunview’s Clinical Director

Going Beneath the Presenting Symptom

What brings someone to treatment is usually the tip of the iceberg. Underneath are the patterns, relationships and experiences that keep it going.

Coping skills and relapse prevention matter, and we teach them. But without exploring where a trigger began, a skill can end up as a band-aid over a bullet hole. So we go deeper, at a pace that’s safe for you.

The Approaches We Use

Six approaches, used together rather than one at a time.

Group, Individual and Family: How Sessions Fit Together

A sample week in PHP. In IOP, the group mornings (or evenings) fall on three days instead of five.

Group. One facilitator for the whole morning, so the work goes deeper instead of restarting every hour.

Individual. A weekly session with your primary therapist, plus check-ins when needed.

Family. With your consent, a loved one hears from your therapist in week one; sessions follow on your timeline.

From Insight to Action

Early on, the work is about getting steady. Later, it’s about understanding, and then choosing differently in real life.

  1. 01

    Stabilization

Structure, safety and coping skills first, so the work can happen at all.

  2. 02

    Insight

From “how do I get through this?” to “why do I respond this way?”

  3. 03

    Integration

I understand why I do this, I can see it happening, and I have a choice.

Which Therapies Are Part of Your Level of Care

The same approaches run through every level. What changes is how many days a week you’re in treatment. Compare PHP, IOP and OP.

I just wanted to express my gratitude, every single staff was so kind and compassionate. It took me a while to actually be receptive to the things they were teaching me and trying to help me. But once I was and truly understood and was willing to help myself too it was magic. I’m grateful for them. I’d recommend them to anyone! I also would recommend for Sunview to include same sex groups at least once a week, I believe it helps common issues and resolution insight and connection a more comfortable space for the same sex to connect to each other without feeling judgement or afraid to express their opinions and experiences in front of the other sex. (In my afternoon groups was primary female and it was an amazing experience) so much props to Sunview for giving me the tools and resources to believe myself and better myself! Thank for to every staff member there!!!!

If you are struggling with addiction, this is the place that will make you feel like home. The therapist are amazing in their own unique ways. Group sessions become your best friends in the circle. They are welcoming to any type of addiction, they are loving, and strong therapists.

It was the most rewarding experience I've had in such a long moment of time! The knowledge and expertise of the staff was immeasurable, of high quality and refreshing! A special shout out to Jillian my therapist, Carissa and Frank! This by no means is meant or intended to take from the excellent job done by each individual employee and Sunview. I'm not the type that would just throw around gratitude lightly! Last but not least, I want to give a shout out to all my peers and all participants of Sunview, for their unselfish willingness to surrender and assist the healing and recovery of others! God bless you! Love, Henry Edwards and Tiffany Cunningham!
