Family Therapy for Addiction Recovery in West Palm Beach

Recovery is not only an individual process.

Addiction and mental health struggles affect the whole family. We bring your loved ones into treatment when it helps and when you agree, at a pace that fits you, with a team trained to see the system around you.

Why Family Systems Matter in Addiction and Recovery

Every member of a family plays a role, whether they recognize it or not. Each person helps keep the system’s sense of “normal,” even when those patterns aren’t healthy. Even someone who has been cut off still plays a part through the distance itself.

Patterns also travel across generations: beliefs, coping strategies and ways of relating get passed down. We look at them in a circle, not a straight line, because each person’s response shapes the others.

At Sunview, family therapy is part of treatment within our PHP, IOP and outpatient programs, not a standalone service. If you’re looking for weekly private family counseling only, we’ll point you to the right place.

How Families Are Involved at Sunview

On a timeline that fits your treatment

  1. At intake

Getting to know your family system

A biopsychosocial assessment explores your family history and the people you feel closest to. We review the releases of information you sign and talk about your comfort level.

  2. First week

    Initial family contact

With your consent, your therapist reaches out to a loved one to introduce themselves and hear what they think would help us understand you.

  3. Ongoing

    Updates when appropriate

When appropriate, and depending on your needs, that can mean weekly phone calls or email updates, always within the limits you agree to.

  4. Biweekly or monthly

    Family sessions

Sessions with your loved ones on a timeline that supports your treatment, not someone else’s schedule.

  1. A crisis
  2. Someone steps in to rescue
  3. Short-term relief
  4. The pattern repeats

Break the cycle

Boundaries are not abandonment. Family work helps loved ones step out of rescuing and into support that actually helps recovery.

Breaking Enabling and Rescuing Cycles

Family therapy exists to break enabling and rescuing cycles and to align expectations, so that recovery is supported rather than undermined.

Families often come to us exhausted and full of questions. Did we enable this? If we set boundaries, are we abandoning them? Those questions are part of the work.

We help loved ones understand their own patterns and roles in the system, so the family can change alongside the person in treatment instead of pulling them back into old routines.

When Someone Is Not Ready to Involve Family

Not everyone wants their family involved, and that’s okay. We take your hesitation seriously, support you, and never pressure you into it.

We may gently invite you to stay open-minded, and to explore what’s underneath the hesitation. As treatment progresses, healthy involvement sometimes becomes possible in ways that didn’t feel safe at first. Either way, the decision stays with you and your therapist.

Sunview Wellness is second to none. The staff at Sunview are amazing people who truly want to make their clients lives better and healthier. The staff provides you and others with an environment conducive to healing, learning and managing your life. You are able to express yourself without judgment from the staff or other clients. You are provided guidance through group sessions, private one-on-one sessions with a therapist and written materials to use outside of the facility. Although Sunview Wellness is a business and needs revenue to survive, the staff focuses predominately on your health and not on its bottom line. I highly recommend Sunview Wellness as an option for your path to healthier and more productive life.

Gabe is awesome! I have had therapists before at other practices and he is one of the most empathetic and down to earth providers I have had. The group facilitators and other staff there are very kind and helpful as well. The support to get you back onto a good mental health path is amazing. Would recommend if you want more help than just a one on one therapist but want to still go home and/or work after.

I just wanted to express my gratitude, every single staff was so kind and compassionate. It took me a while to actually be receptive to the things they were teaching me and trying to help me. But once I was and truly understood and was willing to help myself too it was magic. I’m grateful for them. I’d recommend them to anyone! I also would recommend for Sunview to include same sex groups at least once a week, I believe it helps common issues and resolution insight and connection a more comfortable space for the same sex to connect to each other without feeling judgement or afraid to express their opinions and experiences in front of the other sex. (In my afternoon groups was primary female and it was an amazing experience) so much props to Sunview for giving me the tools and resources to believe myself and better myself! Thank for to every staff member there!!!!
