How Personality Disorders and Substance Use Feed Each Other

Old patterns, new consequences

At Sunview, personality disorders are treated as part of dual diagnosis treatment, alongside substance use, within our Partial Hospitalization, Intensive Outpatient and Outpatient programs. They are among the presentations we see most often in people who come to us for addiction treatment.

Long-standing patterns in how you feel, react and relate to others can make life feel unstable. Substances often become a way to manage intense emotions or painful relationships. Then using adds its own conflict and fallout, and the patterns get stronger.

We don’t believe anyone is born “bad” or destined to struggle. People are shaped by their experiences, relationships and environments. Understanding that is where change starts.

At Sunview

Treating Personality Disorders Alongside Addiction at Sunview

Compassion without avoiding accountability

A relational lens

We look at the relationships, family systems and learned patterns around you, not just at a diagnosis. People are shaped by their experiences, and can create something different.

Carefrontation in group

Honest feedback, given with care and without shame. You practice hearing hard things without shutting down, and saying them without attacking.

A strong therapeutic relationship

Our lead therapist’s work centers on the therapeutic alliance and connection as drivers of lasting change. That relationship is where new patterns get practiced first.

Patterns in real time

You go home every day. The conflict at home or at work comes back to group, where we slow it down and look at what happened.

Therapy

Therapy Approaches We Use

Skills and insight, practiced in relationship

DBT gives you tools for the moment. Deeper work helps you see why the moments happen. Both get practiced with real people: your therapist and your group.

How therapy works at Sunview
DBT
Builds skills for emotional regulation, distress tolerance and relationships: the core of how we work with intense emotions.
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
Helps you understand the different parts of yourself, including the protective ones that react before you can think.
Psychodynamic therapy
Looks at how early experiences and relationships formed the patterns you live within today.
Family systems work
Explores the roles and patterns in your family that may keep the cycle going, with your consent.
CBT
Works on the thoughts and beliefs that drive reactions and substance use.
Medication

Psychiatric Care and Medication

One part of the work, integrated into your program

Psychiatric evaluation and medication management are part of every program through our partner, Telemed Clinix. Your provider looks at what you already take and adjusts only when it’s clinically indicated, as part of the same plan your therapist is working from.

Medication can support stability. The relational and therapeutic work is where lasting change happens. You can keep the same provider after you finish.

What psychiatric care includes

  • Evaluation and review of your current medications
  • Appointments scheduled for you, on site
  • The same provider after discharge, if you want

Level of care

Which Level of Care Fits

Our Clinical Director helps you decide

Many people start in the Partial Hospitalization Program, where daily group work gives patterns room to show up and change. The Intensive Outpatient Program, day or evening, fits when you need depth and have to keep working. The Outpatient Program keeps support in place as new patterns settle in.

Psychiatric care and medication management

Sunview is outpatient care.

If detox, residential treatment or housing needs to come first, we’ll help you get there and plan Sunview as your next step.

I just wanted to express my gratitude, every single staff was so kind and compassionate. It took me a while to actually be receptive to the things they were teaching me and trying to help me. But once I was and truly understood and was willing to help myself too it was magic. I’m grateful for them. I’d recommend them to anyone! I also would recommend for Sunview to include same sex groups at least once a week, I believe it helps common issues and resolution insight and connection a more comfortable space for the same sex to connect to each other without feeling judgement or afraid to express their opinions and experiences in front of the other sex. (In my afternoon groups was primary female and it was an amazing experience) so much props to Sunview for giving me the tools and resources to believe myself and better myself! Thank for to every staff member there!!!!

It was the most rewarding experience I've had in such a long moment of time! The knowledge and expertise of the staff was immeasurable, of high quality and refreshing! A special shout out to Jillian my therapist, Carissa and Frank! This by no means is meant or intended to take from the excellent job done by each individual employee and Sunview. I'm not the type that would just throw around gratitude lightly! Last but not least, I want to give a shout out to all my peers and all participants of Sunview, for their unselfish willingness to surrender and assist the healing and recovery of others! God bless you! Love, Henry Edwards and Tiffany Cunningham!
