Mental Health Conditions We Treat Alongside Substance Use

One plan for both, not two separate treatments

Sunview treats mental health conditions alongside substance use, within our PHP, IOP and OP programs. The conditions we see most often are personality disorders, anxiety and depressive disorders, and trauma-related disorders. Many people are living with more than one.

Integrated care

Why We Treat Mental Health and Substance Use Together

Each one can keep the other going

Substance use often starts as a way of coping with emotional pain. Over time, continued use can deepen depression, anxiety or trauma symptoms, which makes the pull to use stronger. The two become one cycle.

Treating each one separately can miss that connection. We look at how your mental health, substance use, relationships and ways of coping feed each other, so you can start interrupting the cycle. Dual diagnosis treatment explains how this works in practice.

  1. Emotional distress
  2. Using to cope
  3. Symptoms get worse
  4. Stronger pull to use
Psychiatric care

Psychiatric Care and Medication Management Included

Part of your program, not a separate appointment to chase

Psychiatric evaluation and medication management are provided through Telemed Clinix, our psychiatric partner. Appointments happen virtually from a private office at Sunview, and we schedule them for you. Prescriptions go to the pharmacy you choose.

When you finish treatment, you can keep the same provider, so your psychiatric care doesn’t stop when the program does.

What to expect

  • A psychiatric evaluation and a review of what you already take
  • Changes only when clinically indicated
  • Symptoms tracked with the PHQ-9 and GAD-7

Therapies

Therapies We Use for Co-Occurring Conditions

A shared foundation, shaped to you

Every clinician on our team is trauma-informed. We use evidence-based approaches, and we also look beneath the surface symptoms to the patterns and experiences underneath them. Each therapist brings their own specialty within that shared foundation.

Safety first

When a Higher Level of Care Is Needed

Treating the whole person includes knowing when to refer

We watch how you’re doing throughout treatment. If psychiatric symptoms significantly worsen, if you’re not able to take part safely, or if there’s a risk of harm to yourself or others, we’ll help you get to a more intensive level of care for stabilization.

The same goes for concerns like an eating disorder that becomes the main issue: we’ll connect you with a specialized program. That isn’t the end of your work with us. It’s getting you the right support first.

Level of care

Which Level of Care Fits for Co-Occurring Conditions

Our Clinical Director helps you decide

Every level treats mental health and substance use together. The Partial Hospitalization Program gives the most daily support; the Intensive Outpatient Program fits around work, day or evening; the Outpatient Program keeps the work going once life is steadier.

Psychiatric care and medication management

Sunview is outpatient care.

If detox, residential treatment or housing needs to come first, we’ll help you get there and plan Sunview as your next step.

What People Say About Sunview Wellness

Google Reviews

  • Jake J.

Sunview Wellness is second to none. The staff at Sunview are amazing people who truly want to make their clients lives better and healthier. The staff provides you and others with an environment conducive to healing, learning and managing your life. You are able to express yourself without judgment from the staff or other clients. You are provided guidance through group sessions, private one-on-one sessions with a therapist and written materials to use outside of the facility. Although Sunview Wellness is a business and needs revenue to survive, the staff focuses predominately on your health and not on its bottom line. I highly recommend Sunview Wellness as an option for your path to healthier and more productive life.

Wonderful place: caring, understanding, supportive, efficient, knowledgeable and friendly staff.

Gabe is awesome! I have had therapists before at other practices and he is one of the most empathetic and down to earth providers I have had. The group facilitators and other staff there are very kind and helpful as well. The support to get you back onto a good mental health path is amazing. Would recommend if you want more help than just a one on one therapist but want to still go home and/or work after.

I just wanted to express my gratitude, every single staff was so kind and compassionate. It took me a while to actually be receptive to the things they were teaching me and trying to help me. But once I was and truly understood and was willing to help myself too it was magic. I’m grateful for them. I’d recommend them to anyone! I also would recommend for Sunview to include same sex groups at least once a week, I believe it helps common issues and resolution insight and connection a more comfortable space for the same sex to connect to each other without feeling judgement or afraid to express their opinions and experiences in front of the other sex. (In my afternoon groups was primary female and it was an amazing experience) so much props to Sunview for giving me the tools and resources to believe myself and better myself! Thank for to every staff member there!!!!
