What the Intensive Outpatient Program Is

Structured treatment that fits around the rest of your life

Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) gives you the clinical depth of a treatment program without stepping away from your life. You attend group therapy three days a week, meet one-on-one with your primary therapist every week, and see a psychiatric provider when medication is part of your care.

IOP is built for adults who need real support but can’t put everything on hold: working adults, parents, students, and people stepping down from our Partial Hospitalization Program or from residential care. It treats substance use and co-occurring conditions like anxiety, depression and trauma together, as one connected picture. Read more about our substance use treatment and dual diagnosis treatment.

Day IOP: 3 Days a Week, 9 AM to 1 PM

Day IOP meets three mornings a week. You and your team choose the three days around your work, school or family schedule, so treatment doesn’t have to compete with the rest of your week.

Instead of a different facilitator every hour, one clinician leads your group for the whole morning, with breaks. How group therapy works at Sunview.

Evening IOP: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 6 to 9 PM

Evening IOP is built for people who work during the day. You keep your full workday and come to group after it, three evenings a week.

The clinical content is the same as day IOP: the same continuous group with one facilitator, the same weekly individual session and the same access to psychiatric care. Only the clock changes.

A Typical IOP Session at Sunview

Less lecture, more real conversation

You arrive, settle in, and the group starts together. If you rely on our free door-to-door transportation, your ride is already scheduled.

One continuous group

The same facilitator leads the whole session, with breaks along the way. Trust builds faster and the work goes deeper. Topics draw on IFS, CBT, DBT and psychodrama.

Carefrontation

Honest feedback, given with care. Group members learn to point out patterns and blind spots without shaming anyone, and to hear hard things without shutting down. Compassion and accountability, at the same time.

Gender-specific days

Every other Thursday, women and men meet in separate groups. Some things are easier to say to people who relate, and that extra layer of safety often opens up new conversations.

Family contact in week one

With your consent, your therapist contacts a loved one during your first week. After that, family involvement moves at a pace that fits you: updates, calls or family sessions.

Real life comes back to group

You try a skill, then come back and say, “I got triggered at work,” or “this happened with my spouse.” We slow that moment down together and practice a different response.

Is IOP right for you?

Who IOP Is Right For, and Who Needs More First

We recommend the level that sets you up to succeed

Every admission starts with a short pre-screening. Our Clinical Director reviews it and recommends your level of care using ASAM criteria and clinical judgment, looking at your symptoms, length of sobriety, treatment history and home environment. The wrong level of care is a disservice, so if PHP would serve you better, we’ll tell you.

If you’ve been taking opioids or benzodiazepines regularly for a long time, medically supervised detox, and often residential care, comes first. That’s about your safety, and we’ll help you plan the path back to us.

Start your pre-screening

IOP tends to fit if

  • You’re medically stable and not in active withdrawal
  • You need more than a weekly therapy appointment
  • You’re stepping down from PHP, residential treatment or detox
  • You work, study or care for family and need treatment to fit around it

Sunview is outpatient care.

If detox, residential treatment or housing needs to come first, we’ll help you get there and plan Sunview as your next step.
