Help for Families of Someone Struggling With Addiction in West Palm Beach

“I’ve tried everything.” You’re not alone, and you don’t have to have the answers.

If you’re calling for someone you love, start here: what families tell us, what you can and can’t control, how families are involved in treatment, and how to reach us even if your loved one isn’t ready.

  • The Joint Commission
  • National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention
  • SAMHSA
  • National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers

What Families Tell Us When They Call

Families often reach out frustrated, exhausted or scared, and sometimes carrying a lot of guilt. If any of these sound like you, you’re in the right place.

  • “I don’t know how to help my daughter anymore.”
  • “I’ve tried everything.”
  • “What am I supposed to do?”
  • “I’m afraid something is going to happen to him.”
  • “Is my loved one going to be okay?”
  • “How am I supposed to act around them?”
  • “How do I know if this level of care is enough?”
  • “What happens if they leave treatment?”

What You Can and Can’t Control

Setting boundaries is not abandoning them

You can

  • Tell them, calmly and specifically, what you’ve seen and why you’re worried
  • Set boundaries that protect you and the rest of the family
  • Call us to understand the options before you talk to them
  • Take care of your own health and support

You can’t

  • Make someone ready before they are
  • Carry their recovery for them
  • Fix a pattern that took years to form in one conversation
  • Undo the past by rescuing them from every consequence

Many families wonder whether they’ve enabled the problem, or whether saying no means giving up. Families are systems: everyone plays a role, often without realizing it. Understanding your part isn’t about blame. It’s how patterns start to change.

How Families Are Involved at Sunview

We believe in family recovery. Substance use and mental health affect the whole family, and you often see patterns that aren’t obvious in treatment.

Family therapy at Sunview
  1. Consent comes first

Your loved one decides whether and how family is involved. We review the releases they sign and their comfort level.

  2. A first call in week one

With consent, their therapist contacts a family member during the first week to introduce themselves and hear what you’ve seen.

  3. Updates on a timeline that fits

Depending on clinical needs, that can mean weekly calls or email updates.

  4. Family sessions

Family sessions, often every two weeks or monthly, when they’re clinically appropriate.

When Your Loved One Isn’t Ready

“I know I have a problem, but I don’t think it’s that bad.” Ambivalence is common. It doesn’t always mean they don’t want help; sometimes they’re scared of what changing will require. A few ways to open the door:

  • “I love you, and I’m worried. Can we talk about what’s been going on?”
  • “You don’t have to decide anything today. Would you be willing to hear about one option?”
  • “I called a program to ask questions. Would you want to hear what they said?”

You can call us first. We’ll talk with you, not at them, and help you plan the conversation. Talk to admissions.

What Treatment Looks Like Day to Day

Your loved one lives at home and comes to Sunview for group therapy, a weekly individual session and psychiatric care, in the mornings or in the evening. Many keep working. Free door-to-door transportation is available.

We treat substance use and mental health together: see substance use disorder treatment and dual diagnosis treatment.

Your Own Support Matters Too

Recovery is not only an individual process. You’ve been carrying a lot, and you deserve support whether or not your loved one is ready. Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish. It’s part of how families heal.

It was the most rewarding experience I've had in such a long moment of time! The knowledge and expertise of the staff was immeasurable, of high quality and refreshing! A special shout out to Jillian my therapist, Carissa and Frank! This by no means is meant or intended to take from the excellent job done by each individual employee and Sunview. I'm not the type that would just throw around gratitude lightly! Last but not least, I want to give a shout out to all my peers and all participants of Sunview, for their unselfish willingness to surrender and assist the healing and recovery of others! God bless you! Love, Henry Edwards and Tiffany Cunningham!

Sunview Wellness was the icing on the cake in my mental health journey and recovery and it honestly changed my life for the better..This program was outstanding in the approach they implement to help all of their clients. The important thing is you have to really want the help and do the work to get where you want and need to be. I believe participation in the group therapy is essential even though it may not be easy at first. Every single person that works at Sunview Wellness is caring and really wants everyone to get well. Laura Contreras was my therapist and she is one of the most caring empathetic individuals I have ever come across. She was truly the right therapist for me. Mia stood out to me ( even though everyone was good) as an excellent group facilitator . Karissa Delaney the office manager was always a welcoming face in the morning. She was always willing to help out with any concerns or questions that I had. I was actually sad when my time came to leave Sunview even though I was ready. I made many friends and enjoyed the interaction with other people that GOT IT with NO JUDGEMENT! And Finally thank you Frank for overseeing and having such a wonderful place for people to come and heal. I’m forever greatful. 😊💕
