The basics

What Dual Diagnosis Means

Two conditions, one connected picture

Dual diagnosis means living with both a substance use disorder and a mental health condition. Naming both matters. But what matters more is understanding the relationship between them.

Substance use can start as a way of coping with emotional distress. Continued use can then make depression, anxiety, trauma symptoms or other conditions worse. Over time the two become deeply connected, and each keeps the other going.

Integrated care

What “Integrated” Looks Like in Practice

We treat the person behind the symptoms

Integrated treatment means treating you as a whole, not as two separate problems. We’re not only trying to stop a behavior or manage a diagnosis. We’re trying to understand what keeps the cycle going, so you can interrupt it.

One team

Your therapist, group facilitator and psychiatric provider work from the same understanding of you.

One plan

Your treatment plan covers substance use and mental health together, and you review it with your therapist every month.

The connection between them

We look at how the two interact and reinforce each other, instead of treating each on its own.

Levels of care

Dual Diagnosis Treatment Across PHP, IOP and OP

The same integrated approach at every level

Dual diagnosis care isn’t a separate track at Sunview. It’s how every program works. You step down as you progress, keeping the same team.

Psychiatry, Medication and Therapy Working Together

Psychiatric evaluation and medication management come through Telemed Clinix, scheduled for you in a private office on site. Your provider reviews what you take and adjusts only when it’s clinically indicated.

Medication can help you stabilize. Therapy builds the insight and skills that last. Together, they cover both sides of the cycle.

Psychiatric care and medication management

Understanding the Why Behind the Behavior

We ask what happened to you, not what’s wrong with you. Psychodynamic work explores how past experiences and relationships still shape your reactions today.

A family systems lens looks at the patterns around you, too, because people don’t struggle in isolation. When it’s clinically appropriate and you agree, loved ones can take part in family therapy.

Who Dual Diagnosis Treatment Is Right For

Adults ready to look at the whole picture

Our programs are for adults 18 and older who are medically and psychiatrically stable enough to take part in outpatient care. Many are stepping down from detox or residential treatment; others come straight from home.

If symptoms are severe right now, or if stopping a substance could cause dangerous withdrawal, a higher level of care comes first. We’ll say so honestly during pre-screening and help you find it.

It tends to fit if

  • You’re living with substance use and a mental health condition
  • You’re not in active withdrawal
  • You have a safe place to live
  • You want to understand why, not just stop
Level of care

Which Level of Care Fits for Dual Diagnosis

Our Clinical Director helps you decide

Our Clinical Director reviews your pre-screening and recommends the Partial Hospitalization Program, the Intensive Outpatient Program or the Outpatient Program, using ASAM criteria and clinical judgment.

Psychiatric care and medication management

Sunview is outpatient care.

If detox, residential treatment or housing needs to come first, we’ll help you get there and plan Sunview as your next step.

It was the most rewarding experience I've had in such a long moment of time! The knowledge and expertise of the staff was immeasurable, of high quality and refreshing! A special shout out to Jillian my therapist, Carissa and Frank! This by no means is meant or intended to take from the excellent job done by each individual employee and Sunview. I'm not the type that would just throw around gratitude lightly! Last but not least, I want to give a shout out to all my peers and all participants of Sunview, for their unselfish willingness to surrender and assist the healing and recovery of others! God bless you! Love, Henry Edwards and Tiffany Cunningham!

Sunview Wellness was the icing on the cake in my mental health journey and recovery and it honestly changed my life for the better..This program was outstanding in the approach they implement to help all of their clients. The important thing is you have to really want the help and do the work to get where you want and need to be. I believe participation in the group therapy is essential even though it may not be easy at first. Every single person that works at Sunview Wellness is caring and really wants everyone to get well. Laura Contreras was my therapist and she is one of the most caring empathetic individuals I have ever come across. She was truly the right therapist for me. Mia stood out to me ( even though everyone was good) as an excellent group facilitator . Karissa Delaney the office manager was always a welcoming face in the morning. She was always willing to help out with any concerns or questions that I had. I was actually sad when my time came to leave Sunview even though I was ready. I made many friends and enjoyed the interaction with other people that GOT IT with NO JUDGEMENT! And Finally thank you Frank for overseeing and having such a wonderful place for people to come and heal. I’m forever greatful. 😊💕
