Recognizing it

Signs Benzodiazepine Use Has Become a Problem

Prescribed doesn’t always mean safe for you

Many people start benzodiazepines for anxiety, panic or sleep, with a prescription. Dependence can build quietly. The fact that a medication was prescribed doesn’t, on its own, tell us whether it’s become a problem, or which level of care fits.

Some common signs

  • You take more than prescribed, or sooner than scheduled
  • Your prescription runs out early
  • You get benzodiazepines from more than one source
  • Anxiety or sleep gets worse when a dose wears off
  • You can’t imagine facing the day without it
  • You mix it with alcohol or other substances
  • You’ve tried to stop or cut down and felt worse than before

Recognizing a few of these is reason enough to call. You don’t need to be sure.

Treatment

How Sunview Treats Benzodiazepine Addiction

After detox, the work on what the pills were holding

Most people come to us once detox and stabilization are done. In PHP, IOP or OP, we treat the dependence and the anxiety underneath it at the same time. You also meet one-on-one with your primary therapist every week for 45 to 60 minutes, and free door-to-door transportation to and from our center is available if you can’t drive yourself.

Anxiety treated alongside

For many people, the anxiety came first. We treat it directly, with therapy and psychiatric care, instead of leaving it to return once the medication stops.

Psychiatric care built in

A Telemed Clinix provider evaluates you and manages psychiatric medication while you’re in treatment. Benzodiazepines aren’t used during the program.

Skills for hard moments

CBT and DBT skills help you handle anxiety, stress and sleepless nights without reaching for a pill.

The deeper work

Psychodynamic work and Internal Family Systems look at where the anxiety began, so skills rest on real understanding.

One group, one facilitator

The same clinician leads your whole session, so trust builds and the conversation goes deeper.

Practice in real life

You bring what happens at home and at work back to group, and we practice a different response together.

Benzodiazepines and Co-Occurring Mental Health

Anxiety is the most common concern alongside benzodiazepine dependence, and panic, trauma or depression often come with it. Treating the dependence without the anxiety leaves half the problem in place, so we treat both, with one team. We track anxiety with the GAD-7 throughout treatment, so you and your therapist can see what’s changing, and review your treatment plan together every month.

When Detox Comes First

If you’ve taken benzodiazepines consistently for an extended time, stopping can carry real withdrawal and medical risks. Medically supervised detox, and often residential care, comes first so you’re stable before intensive therapy.

We look at the dose, how often and how long during pre-screening, help you find detox if you need it, and plan Sunview as your next step.

Week to week

What Treatment Looks Like Week to Week

After detox, steady structure while anxiety settles

Most people start with us once medically supervised detox and stabilization are done.

Your first week

Intake, your first groups and your first one-on-one session. With your consent, your therapist contacts a loved one. We schedule your Telemed Clinix psychiatric evaluation for you, including a review of the medications you take.

A typical morning or evening

One continuous group from 9 AM to 1 PM with the same facilitator, or evening IOP on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 6 to 9 PM. Once a week, 45 to 60 minutes with your primary therapist. CBT and DBT skills for anxious moments are part of the work.

Stepping down

When you’re ready, you move from PHP to IOP to OP with the same team.

Level of care

Which Level of Care Fits

Where most people start after detox

After detox, many people start in the Partial Hospitalization Program for daily structure while anxiety settles. From there they step down to the Intensive Outpatient Program, day or evening, and then the Outpatient Program. Our Clinical Director recommends where you start.

Psychiatric care and medication management

Sunview is outpatient care.

If detox, residential treatment or housing needs to come first, we’ll help you get there and plan Sunview as your next step.

It was the most rewarding experience I've had in such a long moment of time! The knowledge and expertise of the staff was immeasurable, of high quality and refreshing! A special shout out to Jillian my therapist, Carissa and Frank! This by no means is meant or intended to take from the excellent job done by each individual employee and Sunview. I'm not the type that would just throw around gratitude lightly! Last but not least, I want to give a shout out to all my peers and all participants of Sunview, for their unselfish willingness to surrender and assist the healing and recovery of others! God bless you! Love, Henry Edwards and Tiffany Cunningham!

Sunview Wellness was the icing on the cake in my mental health journey and recovery and it honestly changed my life for the better..This program was outstanding in the approach they implement to help all of their clients. The important thing is you have to really want the help and do the work to get where you want and need to be. I believe participation in the group therapy is essential even though it may not be easy at first. Every single person that works at Sunview Wellness is caring and really wants everyone to get well. Laura Contreras was my therapist and she is one of the most caring empathetic individuals I have ever come across. She was truly the right therapist for me. Mia stood out to me ( even though everyone was good) as an excellent group facilitator . Karissa Delaney the office manager was always a welcoming face in the morning. She was always willing to help out with any concerns or questions that I had. I was actually sad when my time came to leave Sunview even though I was ready. I made many friends and enjoyed the interaction with other people that GOT IT with NO JUDGEMENT! And Finally thank you Frank for overseeing and having such a wonderful place for people to come and heal. I’m forever greatful. 😊💕

Sunview Wellness is second to none. The staff at Sunview are amazing people who truly want to make their clients lives better and healthier. The staff provides you and others with an environment conducive to healing, learning and managing your life. You are able to express yourself without judgment from the staff or other clients. You are provided guidance through group sessions, private one-on-one sessions with a therapist and written materials to use outside of the facility. Although Sunview Wellness is a business and needs revenue to survive, the staff focuses predominately on your health and not on its bottom line. I highly recommend Sunview Wellness as an option for your path to healthier and more productive life.
