Signs Alcohol Use Has Become a Problem

When drinking takes more than it gives

There’s no single line that makes drinking a problem. For most people it’s a slow realization that alcohol has started running things. You don’t need to be sure it’s “bad enough” to call. A conversation with admissions is where most people start.

Some common signs

  • You drink more, or for longer, than you meant to
  • You’ve tried to cut back, and it hasn’t held
  • Drinking is causing problems at work, at home or in your relationships, and you keep going anyway
  • You need more to feel the same effect
  • You feel shaky, anxious or sick when you stop, and a drink makes it go away
  • Plans and people you care about keep getting pushed aside
  • The people closest to you are worried

Recognizing a few of these is reason enough to call. You don’t need to be sure.

Treatment

How Sunview Treats Alcohol Addiction

Sobriety removes the drink. Recovery looks at the life around it.

Alcohol is the substance we see most often at Sunview. Treatment happens in PHP, IOP or OP, and if you work days, evening IOP meets Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 6 to 9 PM.

One group, one facilitator

The same clinician leads your group for the whole session, with breaks, so the conversation goes deeper instead of restarting every hour.

A weekly session that’s yours

You meet one-on-one with your primary therapist every week for 45 to 60 minutes, and sooner if something comes up.

The why behind the drinking

Psychodynamic work, inner child work and Internal Family Systems help you understand what the drinking has been doing for you, so you can meet that need another way.

Naltrexone is welcome

Anti-craving medication like naltrexone is supported when a qualified outside provider prescribes and manages it. We coordinate with them.

Real life comes back to group

The Friday night, the hard conversation at home: you bring what actually happened back into the room, and we practice a different response.

Family, when you’re ready

With your consent, your therapist contacts a loved one in your first week. After that, involvement moves at your pace.

When Detox Comes First

Alcohol withdrawal can be dangerous. If you’ve been drinking heavily for a long time, stopping suddenly can carry real medical risk, and medically supervised detox may need to come first.

We’ll look at this with you during pre-screening, help you find a detox program if you need one, and plan Sunview as your next step. Many people come to us right after detox.

Week to week

What Treatment Looks Like Week to Week

From your first morning to stepping down

Many people start with us right after detox. Here’s how the weeks usually go.

  1. 1

    Week one

    Getting started

Intake, your first groups and your first one-on-one session. With your consent, your therapist contacts a loved one, and we schedule your Telemed Clinix psychiatric appointment for you.

  2. 2

    Most days

    A morning or an evening

In PHP, one continuous group from 9 AM to 1 PM with the same facilitator. If you work days, evening IOP meets Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 6 to 9 PM. Once a week, 45 to 60 minutes with your primary therapist.

  3. 3

    Over time

    Stepping down

As your days fill back up, you move from PHP to IOP to OP with the same team. If an outside provider prescribes naltrexone, it continues alongside.

Level of care

Which Level of Care Fits

Where most people start with alcohol

Many people start in the Partial Hospitalization Program right after detox, for the most structure. If you work days, the Intensive Outpatient Program has an evening option. When your days fill back up, the Outpatient Program keeps one morning a week in place. Our Clinical Director recommends the level that fits you.

Psychiatric care and medication management

Sunview is outpatient care.

If detox, residential treatment or housing needs to come first, we’ll help you get there and plan Sunview as your next step.

It was the most rewarding experience I've had in such a long moment of time! The knowledge and expertise of the staff was immeasurable, of high quality and refreshing! A special shout out to Jillian my therapist, Carissa and Frank! This by no means is meant or intended to take from the excellent job done by each individual employee and Sunview. I'm not the type that would just throw around gratitude lightly! Last but not least, I want to give a shout out to all my peers and all participants of Sunview, for their unselfish willingness to surrender and assist the healing and recovery of others! God bless you! Love, Henry Edwards and Tiffany Cunningham!

Sunview Wellness was the icing on the cake in my mental health journey and recovery and it honestly changed my life for the better..This program was outstanding in the approach they implement to help all of their clients. The important thing is you have to really want the help and do the work to get where you want and need to be. I believe participation in the group therapy is essential even though it may not be easy at first. Every single person that works at Sunview Wellness is caring and really wants everyone to get well. Laura Contreras was my therapist and she is one of the most caring empathetic individuals I have ever come across. She was truly the right therapist for me. Mia stood out to me ( even though everyone was good) as an excellent group facilitator . Karissa Delaney the office manager was always a welcoming face in the morning. She was always willing to help out with any concerns or questions that I had. I was actually sad when my time came to leave Sunview even though I was ready. I made many friends and enjoyed the interaction with other people that GOT IT with NO JUDGEMENT! And Finally thank you Frank for overseeing and having such a wonderful place for people to come and heal. I’m forever greatful. 😊💕

Sunview Wellness is second to none. The staff at Sunview are amazing people who truly want to make their clients lives better and healthier. The staff provides you and others with an environment conducive to healing, learning and managing your life. You are able to express yourself without judgment from the staff or other clients. You are provided guidance through group sessions, private one-on-one sessions with a therapist and written materials to use outside of the facility. Although Sunview Wellness is a business and needs revenue to survive, the staff focuses predominately on your health and not on its bottom line. I highly recommend Sunview Wellness as an option for your path to healthier and more productive life.

Wonderful place: caring, understanding, supportive, efficient, knowledgeable and friendly staff.

  • Matthew L.

Gabe is awesome! I have had therapists before at other practices and he is one of the most empathetic and down to earth providers I have had. The group facilitators and other staff there are very kind and helpful as well. The support to get you back onto a good mental health path is amazing. Would recommend if you want more help than just a one on one therapist but want to still go home and/or work after.
