Group Therapy for Addiction and Mental Health in West Palm Beach

The same facilitator, the same group, so the work can go deeper.

Group therapy is the heart of every program day at Sunview: one continuous group, led by one clinician, where people with substance use and co-occurring mental health conditions do real work together.

One Continuous Group, One Facilitator

Many programs switch topics and facilitators every hour. We don’t. Your group runs from 9 AM to 1 PM with breaks along the way, and the same clinician leads it from start to finish. The group builds trust faster, and the conversation can keep going where it left off.

Group therapy happens within our outpatient programs, PHP, IOP and OP, not as a standalone service. If you’re looking for weekly private therapy only, we’ll point you to the right place.

Many people in group live with substance use and a mental health condition at once. See dual diagnosis treatment.

  1. 9 AM

    The group starts together

Everyone checks in. Your facilitator already knows where yesterday left off.

  2. Break
  3. Mid-morning

    The work goes deeper

Topics draw on IFS, CBT, DBT and psychodrama. Real moments from home and work get slowed down and looked at.

  5. Late morning

    Practice and feedback

Skills, experiential exercises and honest feedback from people who know your story.

  6. 1 PM

Your afternoon is yours. What happens in it becomes material for the next session.

Carefrontation: Honest Feedback With Care

Carefrontation means being willing to have an honest, sometimes difficult conversation with someone because you care about them. The point is never to shame, attack or criticize. It’s to help someone see a pattern they can’t see yet. In group, you learn to give feedback from what you observed, not from assumptions about someone’s intentions, and to pause and listen when it’s your turn to receive it.

Instead of

“You’re being manipulative.”

We practice

“I noticed that when you were talking about that situation, it sounded similar to the pattern you described earlier, and I wonder if you might be doing something similar here.”

“We can be compassionate without avoiding accountability, and we can hold someone accountable without taking away their dignity.”

Gender-Specific Group Days

Every other Thursday, women meet together in one group room and men in another. The day follows the same structure as any other, but some experiences are easier to share with people who relate to them more closely.

We started with once a month. The feedback was so positive that we expanded to every other week.

Breaking Secrecy: Why Groups Work

Shared out loud, shame loses its power.

Groups work by breaking secrecy. Someone admits something they’re ashamed of, finds that others in the room share it, and the shame starts to lose its power. Many people spend a long time trying to convince themselves they can manage on their own. In group, saying “I can’t do this by myself anymore” gets a little easier, and sometimes another person sees a pattern you can’t see in yourself.

Experiential Work in Group, Including Psychodrama

Psychodrama is an important part of our group programming. When it’s clinically appropriate, groups also use hands-on, expressive activities that give you another way to process emotions and reach insight beyond talking.

  • Psychodrama

Acting out a situation or relationship in the room, so it can be seen and worked through instead of only talked about.

  • Drawing

A different way to reach feelings that are hard to put into words.

  • Vision boards

Picturing the life you’re building, and what stands between you and it.

  • Other creative exercises

Hands-on activities your facilitator brings in when they fit the group’s work.

Gabe is awesome! I have had therapists before at other practices and he is one of the most empathetic and down to earth providers I have had. The group facilitators and other staff there are very kind and helpful as well. The support to get you back onto a good mental health path is amazing. Would recommend if you want more help than just a one on one therapist but want to still go home and/or work after.

I just wanted to express my gratitude, every single staff was so kind and compassionate. It took me a while to actually be receptive to the things they were teaching me and trying to help me. But once I was and truly understood and was willing to help myself too it was magic. I’m grateful for them. I’d recommend them to anyone! I also would recommend for Sunview to include same sex groups at least once a week, I believe it helps common issues and resolution insight and connection a more comfortable space for the same sex to connect to each other without feeling judgement or afraid to express their opinions and experiences in front of the other sex. (In my afternoon groups was primary female and it was an amazing experience) so much props to Sunview for giving me the tools and resources to believe myself and better myself! Thank for to every staff member there!!!!
