How Bipolar Disorder and Substance Use Feed Each Other

Two conditions, one connected picture

At Sunview, bipolar disorder is treated as part of dual diagnosis treatment, alongside substance use, within our Partial Hospitalization, Intensive Outpatient and Outpatient programs.

Substance use can start as a way to cope with emotional distress, including the highs and lows of a mood disorder. Over time, continued use can make those symptoms harder to manage, and the symptoms can make using feel more necessary. The two become deeply connected.

That’s why we don’t treat them separately. We look at how your mood, your substance use, your relationships and your daily life affect each other, and build one plan around all of it.

At Sunview

Treating Bipolar Disorder Alongside Addiction at Sunview

Steadiness is the foundation

Medication continuity

Your current medications are reviewed, not automatically changed. Your provider adjusts only when it’s clinically indicated.

Stability before depth

The first goal is steadiness. Deeper therapeutic work comes as your mood and your recovery become more stable.

Watching for changes

We pay attention to changes in your mental health and daily functioning throughout treatment, and review your plan with you every month.

One team, one plan

Your therapist and your psychiatric provider work from the same picture of how your mood and substance use affect each other.

Therapy

Therapy Approaches We Use

Skills now, deeper work when you’re ready

Early on, therapy focuses on skills and stability. As you become steadier and trust builds, the work can move from “how do I get through this?” to “why do I respond this way?”

How therapy works at Sunview
CBT
Works on the thought patterns that can drive substance use and make mood harder to manage.
DBT
Builds skills for regulating intense emotions and getting through hard moments without using.
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
Helps you understand the different parts of yourself and how they respond to stress.
Psychodynamic and family systems work
Explores relationships and patterns that may be reinforcing the cycle, when you’re stable enough for that work.
Medication

Psychiatric Care and Medication

Continuity, during treatment and after

Psychiatric evaluation and medication management are part of every program through our partner, Telemed Clinix. Your provider starts by understanding your current regimen and history, not by making assumptions, and sends prescriptions to the pharmacy you choose.

If you receive a long-acting injectable, an outside provider gives and monitors it, and we coordinate with them. When you finish at Sunview, you can keep the same Telemed Clinix provider, so your care doesn’t stop with the program.

What psychiatric care includes

  • Evaluation and review of your current medications
  • Appointments scheduled for you, on site
  • The same provider after discharge, if you want

Level of care

Which Level of Care Fits

Our Clinical Director helps you decide

Many people start in the Partial Hospitalization Program, where daily contact with the team supports stability. The Intensive Outpatient Program, day or evening, fits when you’re steadier and need to keep working, and the Outpatient Program keeps support in place over time. You need to be psychiatrically stable enough to take part in outpatient care; if not yet, we’ll help you get there first.

Psychiatric care and medication management

Sunview is outpatient care.

If detox, residential treatment or housing needs to come first, we’ll help you get there and plan Sunview as your next step.

It was the most rewarding experience I've had in such a long moment of time! The knowledge and expertise of the staff was immeasurable, of high quality and refreshing! A special shout out to Jillian my therapist, Carissa and Frank! This by no means is meant or intended to take from the excellent job done by each individual employee and Sunview. I'm not the type that would just throw around gratitude lightly! Last but not least, I want to give a shout out to all my peers and all participants of Sunview, for their unselfish willingness to surrender and assist the healing and recovery of others! God bless you! Love, Henry Edwards and Tiffany Cunningham!

Sunview Wellness was the icing on the cake in my mental health journey and recovery and it honestly changed my life for the better..This program was outstanding in the approach they implement to help all of their clients. The important thing is you have to really want the help and do the work to get where you want and need to be. I believe participation in the group therapy is essential even though it may not be easy at first. Every single person that works at Sunview Wellness is caring and really wants everyone to get well. Laura Contreras was my therapist and she is one of the most caring empathetic individuals I have ever come across. She was truly the right therapist for me. Mia stood out to me ( even though everyone was good) as an excellent group facilitator . Karissa Delaney the office manager was always a welcoming face in the morning. She was always willing to help out with any concerns or questions that I had. I was actually sad when my time came to leave Sunview even though I was ready. I made many friends and enjoyed the interaction with other people that GOT IT with NO JUDGEMENT! And Finally thank you Frank for overseeing and having such a wonderful place for people to come and heal. I’m forever greatful. 😊💕

Sunview Wellness is second to none. The staff at Sunview are amazing people who truly want to make their clients lives better and healthier. The staff provides you and others with an environment conducive to healing, learning and managing your life. You are able to express yourself without judgment from the staff or other clients. You are provided guidance through group sessions, private one-on-one sessions with a therapist and written materials to use outside of the facility. Although Sunview Wellness is a business and needs revenue to survive, the staff focuses predominately on your health and not on its bottom line. I highly recommend Sunview Wellness as an option for your path to healthier and more productive life.
