Does UHC Cover Outpatient Addiction Treatment?

UnitedHealthcare (UHC) covers a wide range of people, from large employer groups to individuals who buy their own plans. Most UHC plans include benefits for substance use and mental health treatment, and outpatient care such as PHP, IOP and OP is generally covered when it is medically necessary. Exactly how depends on which plan you have.

UHC members sometimes have more than one card: one for medical coverage and one for behavioral health or pharmacy. If you do, send us what you have. We’ll use the right numbers to confirm how your plan covers PHP, IOP and OP, and whether anything needs approval before your first day. If a card is missing, the member ID alone is usually enough to start.

Coverage always depends on the plan: its network, whether approval is needed first, and your share of the cost. We never quote amounts before we’ve checked, and we won’t tell you anything is fully covered until your plan confirms it.

Using Your UHC Plan at Sunview

Sunview is in network with UHC. Here is how the most common plan structures usually affect starting outpatient treatment.

Employer group plans: Group plans follow the design your employer picked, so the rules for outpatient treatment can vary from one UHC card to another. We check yours individually.
PPO and choice-style plans: These plans usually let you go directly to an in-network specialist without a referral. We confirm our network status on your plan so you know where you stand.
HMO and EPO plans: Plans that stay inside a set network may require a referral or limit coverage to in-network providers. If that applies to you, we’ll tell you up front.
Individual and Marketplace plans: If your plan is an individual or Marketplace plan, the network can be narrower. The name printed on your card helps us identify it quickly.

What to have ready

Have your UHC card in front of you. The member ID and plan name on the front are the key details, and the back often lists a dedicated behavioral health or mental health number that we can use.

UHC cards usually print the plan’s network name near the member ID, such as Choice Plus or Navigate. Choice Plus-style plans generally let you see in-network specialists without a referral, while Navigate-style plans are built around a primary care provider and may ask for one. Reading us that name saves a step.

Approvals and reviews

Many UHC plans review PHP and IOP before they begin and again at set points while you are in treatment. That review is routine, not a sign that something is wrong. When your plan asks for it, our team sends what is needed and tells you as soon as we hear back.

Good to know

On many UHC plans, behavioral health benefits are administered by Optum, so your card or the benefits line on the back may say Optum rather than UHC. You don’t need to figure that out yourself: that’s exactly what the free verification is for.

Sunview Wellness was the icing on the cake in my mental health journey and recovery and it honestly changed my life for the better..This program was outstanding in the approach they implement to help all of their clients. The important thing is you have to really want the help and do the work to get where you want and need to be. I believe participation in the group therapy is essential even though it may not be easy at first. Every single person that works at Sunview Wellness is caring and really wants everyone to get well. Laura Contreras was my therapist and she is one of the most caring empathetic individuals I have ever come across. She was truly the right therapist for me. Sunview Wellness is second to none. The staff at Sunview are amazing people who truly want to make their clients lives better and healthier. The staff provides you and others with an environment conducive to healing, learning and managing your life. You are able to express yourself without judgment from the staff or other clients. You are provided guidance through group sessions, private one-on-one sessions with a therapist and written materials to use outside of the facility. Although Sunview Wellness is a business and needs revenue to survive, the staff focuses predominately on your health and not on its bottom line. Gabe is awesome! I have had therapists before at other practices and he is one of the most empathetic and down to earth providers I have had. The group facilitators and other staff there are very kind and helpful as well. The support to get you back onto a good mental health path is amazing. Would recommend if you want more help than just a one on one therapist but want to still go home and/or work after.
